The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was founded in 1971 and is the largest dental student organization in the United States. With a membership of more than 24,000, ASDA represents 82% of dental students from all 68 dental schools.  ASDA’s mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of dental students.  The association introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.  ASDA representatives vote in the ADA House of Delegates, sit on most ADA councils and commissions and comprise one of the most respected student organizations in the nation.

ASDA is located off Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, with a staff of 14 and an operating budget of $4.5 million.


The Marketing and Communications Manager will be responsible for  marketing and communication initiatives to drive membership, event attendance and brand awareness. They will oversee setting and guiding the vision, strategy and tactics for all communication and marketing initiatives, to consistently articulate and promote ASDA’s brand and mission. Will develop and execute ASDA’s content strategy and determine the best method to create, repurpose and distribute content to different audiences. They will be responsible for enhancing the delivery of content and information to different segments by utilizing data and implementing marketing best practices. They will develop content for and edit ASDA’s emails and e-newsletters. Communicates with outside organizations about ASDA activities and announcements.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate annual communication strategies and marketing plans across ASDA audiences. Content included in channels including ASDA’s website, e-mail, and social media.
  • Manage the development and execution of association wide content strategy and in the development of content auditing guidelines.
  • Leads content audit process.
  • Lead production for all public-facing print or electronic collateral/marketing materials:
    • Identify need, determine contributors, write the value proposition and message
    • Develop project plan with milestones and deadlines
    • Review collateral for appropriateness, organization, accuracy, quality and conformance to ASDA style
    • Manage design and print
  • Manage the development of association brand guidelines
  • Manage association marketing budget.
  • Use analytics (traffic behavior, users, hits, visitors and downloads) to make recommendations (reports and analysis) on how to improve the user experience.
  • Develop mobile app strategy, including selection of vendor and app management.
  • Write and distribute ASDA press releases. Manage requests from media and arrange for interviews with ASDA spokespersons.
  • Manage relationship with outside vendors, including videographers, printers, freelance designers and staffing agency and other personnel as needed.
  • Develop and maintain social media strategy for Instagram, YouTube and other platforms as needed.
  • Maintain content calendar and performance analytics for social media. Oversee member participation in national ASDA’s social platforms (contests, takeovers, etc.).
  • Create and provide art for meeting apps, website, email communications and social media, as needed.
  • Contribute to design and video projects as needed.
  • Other projects as assigned by the Director of Strategic Initiatives.
  • Develop content and schedule for homepage of website.
  • Works with staff to develop marketing, communication and advertising materials that communicate the value of membership

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ association marketing experience in digital, print marketing and content strategy.
  • Proven skills in project management, content development and audience engagement.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; can produce effective and engaging copy.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills using the A.P. style.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing and e-mail best practices.
  • Able to apply statistics and data to make strong marketing recommendations
  • Familiarity with interactive online media, including web-driven, broadcast e-mail and social networking.
  • Experience using Google analytics and other marketing platforms such as Constant Contact
  • Some travel and weekend/overtime work required.
